Top Ways Business Can Increase Search Engine Visibility By Utilizing Videos

April 27, 2010

Black Enterprise Magazine, a nationwide publication, interviewed AIS Media CEO Thomas Harpointner for his insight on how businesses can optimize their YouTube videos for search engine compatibility. His comments included in excerpt below:

black_enterprise_magazine_youtube_optimization_aismedia“Google recently updated their search engine algorithms,” said Thomas Harpointner, CEO of AIS Media. “You will rank higher with Google and other search engines just by having a YouTube video. It is important to have as much content on your site as possible if you are attempting to crawl your way to the top of the search engines. The objectives of any YouTube video your company creates should be that it is easily found, it attracts an audience and it’s produced with SEO rankings in mind.”

Top 3 Ways Businesses Can Optimize YouTube Videos:

  • Keep content short and to the point: There is a 10 minute limit for any video that’s created on YouTube. Most viewers’ attention span only lasts for about two minutes so it’s important to keep your content short and to the point. If you need more time to deliver your message then create multiple videos on various topics rather than one video on several topics.
  • Enable Auto Captioning: Auto Captioning is one of YouTube’s newest features. Auto-captioning leverages certain speech-to-text algorithms found in Google’s Voice Search to automatically generate requested video captions. Companies looking to generate buzz around a viral video campaign will benefit from users’ abilities to easily search and find videos via captioned content. This is a clear message to producers that they need to make videos that are true to their title and have valuable content. When a producer or writer creates content that appears in video, it is important to incorporate keywords and phrases because it will be picked up by Google and other search engines.
  • Focus on the end result: Businesses need to focus on the end result of the YouTube video and make sure to produce it with search engine optimization (SEO) rankings in mind. Optimizing your video for search engines plays a key role in being found. There should be a clear call-to-action (CTA) at the end of the video that leads the viewer to visit a specific landing page. YouTube allows you to see the number of times a video has been viewed, but views are not as accurate as actual web statistics. A clear CTA must be put into place that directs the viewer to a specific landing page in order to measure the effectiveness of your YouTube video.
