Companies find that trimming back traditional media advertising, which offers very little insight, or supplementing their advertising with an online component, where instant analysis is possible, gets marketers more bang for their marketing buck.

"The companies that have a cross-channel marketing strategy are the ones that are actually surviving this economic downturn," Harpointner remarked, however many companies such as Circuit City implemented their online strategy too late. Others like Best Buy and GAP were able to supplement their traditional campaigns with an Internet strategy. By measuring, ROI (return on investment) these companies adjusted to changing consumer preferences and economic fluctuations, leaving their competition behind.

Measuring ROI and other metrics on the internet is simple and can be performed in real time. Because web marketers can see how consumers are interacting with their campaigns, "changes and adjustments can be made almost instantly...and the results can be measured in real-time" which is the the most exciting feature of the web, Thomas Harpointner concluded.
