More people are using the Internet as a tool this year, not just a place to make purchases, said Boone and Thomas Harpointner, chief executive and co-founder of AIS Media, a digital marketing and consulting firm.
"People are using the Internet to find the best bargain for their money, especially those who are squeezed by the mortgage market," Boone said.
Online retailers seem more aware of the need for bargains, offering customers free shipping and even free return shipping, as well as discounts on items, Harpointner said.
Without the Internet promotions, sales in brick-and-mortar stores might be even more anemic, he added.
"Many customers are using the Internet to educate themselves and price-shop," Harpointner said.
